First RED cameras with Nikon Z mount create new possibilities for filmmakers

Z CINEMA, which combines the expertise and groundbreaking technologies of Nikon and RED, has arrived with the launch of two RED cinema cameras equipped with the Nikon Z mount.

The V-RAPTOR [X] Z Mount is a new version of RED’s flagship, a camera lauded for its unmatched low-light performance, dynamic range, resolution, high frame rates and industry-leading 8K VV large format global shutter sensor. Using RED’s Global Vision tools, it has a dynamic range of 20+ stops in Extended Highlights mode, colours and details are beautifully captured and smooth and delicate tones are apparent even in challenging light.

The second camera is the compact KOMODO-X Z Mount, which has a 6K Super 35 global shutter sensor with wide dynamic range and high-speed performance and can record at 6K at up to 80fps and 4K up to 120fps. The KOMODO-X Z Mount also supports R3D REDCODE RAW, RED’s proprietary video data format, which is efficient and easy to manage when editing, while maintaining superior grading capability.

Both cameras feature improved autofocus, utilising Nikon’s Z mount to allow filmmakers to draw from the long and celebrated line of NIKKOR Z and NIKKOR F mount lenses. NIKKOR Z mount lenses offer outstanding sharpness and aberration control, reduced focus breathing and AF systems optimised for videography and filmmaking. Pairing the camera with the Nikon Mount Adapter FTZ II opens up the possibilities of using classic and vintage lenses from the AI (auto indexing) NIKKOR series onwards. Both cameras are also compatible with the new NIKKOR Z 28-135mm f/4 PZ power zoom.

Two optional PL mount adapter packs will also be available, one with electronic ND.
