Jon's journey into photography started at six, when his grandfather gifted him his first camera. During high school, he had a transformative experience, seeing Goya’s ‘Disasters of War’ series, which deeply influenced his photographic approach, driving him to seek out and echo the raw, unfiltered realities of life in his work.
My photography kit varies based on the project at hand, but a few items are constants. I primarily shoot with a Nikon Z 7II camera due to its simplicity, excellent resolution, and dynamic range. My go-to lenses are the NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.8 S, which is perfect for capturing complex scenes with multiple moments happening simultaneously, and the NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.8 S, offering exceptional sharpness for portrait and street photography.
The 85 1.8 and 105mm macro are always with me in case I want to step back, and I sometimes use the 28-75 2.8 in fast moving news situations where I don’t want to dirty the sensor. My final two lenses which I love are the PC-E NIKKOR 24mm f/3.5D ED lens, and the PC-E Micro NIKKOR 45mm f/2.8D ED tilt shift lens, which accompany me on every assignment.
For filmmaking, I’m currently using a specialized set up that combines the Z 8/Z 9, and a variety of Z lenses and older NIKKOR lenses. I am enjoying the process of upgrading to the newer, higher resolution Nikons, as they are making incredible strides in the video area. I really appreciate the low impact nature of the Z system, and its intuition that allows me to focus on telling the important stories of our time.
